How to Get the Courage you Need to have the Life you Want

“Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.” ― Anaïs Nin

There are many situations that will require courage in your life. Courage to take that next step. Courage to change. Courage to step out of your comfort zone. Courage to leave your past behind. Courage to start something new. Courage to believe in yourself. Courage to stand up for something you believe in. Courage to forgive someone. Courage to let go and Trust God.

The most important thing to know about Courage is that it is not the absence of fear but it is because fear is present that we need Courage. The Free Dictionary defines Courage as “The state or quality of mind or spirit that enables one to face danger, fear, or vicissitudes with self-possession, confidence, and resolution; bravery.”

So now that we know when Courage is needed and what it means, how do you get Courage? There are probably as many clichés as there are days of the month, life is short, carpe diem, and many more. But beneath all these lie the truth, you only have one life. I believe that we are all destined for a life of abundance, freedom and bravery.

Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you.  1 Peter 5:7

It starts with taking that first step. Half is done when the beginning is done. But let’s be a bit more practical. You all know the saying How do you eat an Elephant? One bit at a time. So here are 5 Steps to Courage that will help you get started and stay focussed.

5 Steps of Courage or GRASS
1. Grand Vision
2. Reality
3. Aspirational Goals
4. Strategy
5. Step Up!

1. Grand Vision
Make sure you have a Big Vision. Look beyond yourself this will make it easier and find something that is worth suffering for. Where can you make a difference with what you do? When problems arise, as they always do, you can look above your problems to see your Vision and keep moving forward.

2. Reality
Be realistic about what it is that you need to do and how long it will take to reach your goals. Celebrate every small success and milestone along the way. This is what will keep you motivated.

3. Aspirational Goals
Write down your goals. Break them up into smaller chunks with a timeline. Without goals we don’t know what it is that we are striving for, and it also makes it harder to know when we’ve reached a milestone that we can celebrate. Having no Goal is like a ship sailing without a course .. where would it end up?

4. Strategy
This is your How-to plan to get to your goals. The plan that will get you there the fastest. Who do you need to connect with? What knowledge do you need to gain? What skill do you need to practise? Which experts to you need to involve?

5. Step Up!
You can have the best Vision, the best Goals and the best Strategy to get you there, but if you don’t take that step and DO IT then nothing will happen. This is where your Courage starts taking shape. Procrastination is a killer of dreams and is a fear-based action. The best acronym I’ve seen for Fear is False-Evidence-Appearing-Real.

May you have the Courage to Live the Life you were destined to Live. May you have the Courage to be Free.
